Internship: May 27, 2025, to August 9, 2025
Appointments
Appointments are continuous from May 27, 2025, to August 9, 2025 (other than federal holidays and weekends). Applicants must conduct their research onsite at the facility or affiliated research center. Selected applicants must be able to participate for the entire appointment period of the internship program.
Leave may be considered during the DoD HBCU/MI Summer Research Internship Program. Leave and time off requests must be approved by BOTH the mentor and DoD HBCU/MI Program Team. All appointments are contingent on the successful completion of a background investigation.
- Interns are expected to work 40 hours per week during their internship.
- Leave may be considered during the DoD HBCU/MI Summer Research Internship Program.
- All program participants are considered guest investigators and are subject to laboratory regulations governing visiting scientists.
Stipends
DoD HBCU/MI Summer Research Internship Program participants receive a stipend of $1400/week, paid bi-weekly.
Applicants should be aware that stipend payments from other federal funding sources—including research grants and contracts—may not be accepted during the summer appointment.
Relocation
The DoD HBCU/MI Summer Research Internship Program will provide a dislocation payment of $800.00 to help with relocation expenses, including baggage fees, taxi/uber services, meals, tolls, transportation to and from the airport, etc. The dislocation payment is provided before the start of the program, but it should be used for both arrival and departure expenses.
Travel or Mileage Reimbursement
The program will coordinate travel to and from the lab (at the beginning) and the lab (at the end) of the research period. The coordinated travel may be by airplane or train. The program administrator will book travel; selected interns should NOT book travel.
While a program administrator will work with an intern to select travel dates, times, and methods, these cannot be changed once travel is booked. Any changes made by the intern are the intern’s financial responsibility and will not be reimbursed by the program.
If a participant chooses to drive, reimbursement for expenses incurred when traveling by personal automobile instead of air travel for out-of-state travel may not exceed the cost the traveler would have otherwise incurred if the traveler had flown. Mileage reimbursement is a flat amount per mile. Tolls are reimbursable. No additional reimbursement expenses are included. Mileage will be verified using the departure and destination locations.
Housing
Housing is provided and will be coordinated by the program. The program administrator will book housing; selected interns should NOT book their housing.
Intern Seminar
All selected interns are required to attend the Intern Seminar, which will be held in Arlington, VA, on July 10 -11, 2025. The program will book travel and hotel rooms for all selected interns. Interns should NOT book travel or hotel rooms for the intern seminar.
