Participating Lab: Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC)

Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC) is a U.S. Navy command providing research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E), and in-service engineering to deliver specialized facility and expeditionary solutions to the warfighter. As NAVFAC’s only warfare center, we provide technology and unique, agile solutions for the warfighter that specifically focus on expeditionary, oceans, and shore needs from enduring bases to forward deployed expeditionary locations.

NAVFAC EXWC Opp #1

Expeditionary Tacticle Water Resilience

Research Opportunity Location:
Port Hueneme, CA

Research Opportunity Description:
Water security is a growing concern for DoD, due to changing climate conditions, and a new operational construct. EXWC will support R&D efforts to discover new innovations to enable smaller, more efficient water purification units. Leveraging its extensive experience with testing and evaluation of water desalination systems, EXWC will evaluate the limitations of existing Commercial Off the Shelf systems and help define the requirements for a small man portable unit to be pilot tested at the end of this program. EXWC will also work to improve US Navy capabilities in water purification R&D capabilities and explore the use of data analytics to help understand operational water needs and resource availability.

NAVFAC EXWC Opp #2

Omniverse and 3D Visualization

Research Opportunity Location:
Port Hueneme, CA

Research Opportunity Description:
3D visualization is converging from tools developed for entertainment/Hollywood visuals and physics-based engineering CAD and simulation tools.  As more engineering design starts to rely on digital models, and software simulations, and as the entertainment industry evolves to more realistic 3D visuals more digital files and environments will be available. How do we start using digital collaborative environments and start building up “an industrial metaverse”, where large communities can start collaborating to build vast digital worlds and complex engineering systems such as entire ships and planes? How do we leverage synthetic environments to move prototype simulations to virtual testing and evaluation in a synthetic environment and explore multi-agent interactions?

Research Opportunity Skill Set:

Geospatial science, environmental engineering, general engineering

Data Driven Decision-Making and Ontologies

Research Opportunity Location:
Port Hueneme, CA

Research Opportunity Description:
Develop data driven decision-making processes. Develop Ontologies to label and organize data. Organize data to help visualize organizational operational processes and better understand problems and courses of action. Develop an Ontology to label and categorize data, so the community has a standard vocabulary as well as establishing the framework for software programing to access and use that data. Application would be for an organization to map out their operational processes, decision methods, actionable resources.
